How do I stop black mold from regrowing on my bathroom ceiling?

I’ve scrubbed it all off with bleach before but it reappeared in the exact same spots. When I scrubbed, there were still stains. Is that the problem? It’s spreading across the ceiling again and starting to work it’s way down the walls. In some places, behind the black mold, areas of the ceiling have a faint pinkish orange hue.

I’m aware of toxic mold but I can’t tell if this is the “bad” one. Is there an easy way to find out? How much does it cost to have it tested? Most importantly, how do I keep this from constantly coming back?

I rent this apartment and I don’t have a good relationship with the landlord. He is a slumlord and refuses to fix most problems anyway. I’m really looking to take care of this myself without stirring up trouble with him. It needs to be as cheap as possible since I don’t want to put money into something that I don’t own.
Constant ceiling scrubbing is not really an option. I have 9′ ceilings and no easy access to a ladder. I’m looking for more of a long term solution. I live on the top floor of a building (if that matters)

I found black mold in the laundry room, under the tile. What is the first step?

J to K asked:

The was a fire on the 3rd floor last week, and I live on the 1st floor of the condo. We just had insurance people come by the other day to have them to check out damages. Most of water leakage happened in the laundry room, and through out the inspections, they found black mold underneath the tile. We don’t know how bad it is yet and how long it’s been there. But the insurance companies(homeowner’s & buiding insurance)told me that they dont cover mold. They also said that they won’t even touch the area where the mold is and we really need to fix up the damges from the fire. What do I need to do? Do I have the contractor hire someone for the mold inspection? My neighbors are urging me to get somebody out right away to check out the mold. How much would this cost out of my pocket? I need some help.

Toxic Black Mold - Why Are They Toxic?

Apr 30

Markus Skupeika asked:

Everybody has a first time experience with molds and mildews. If you haven’t met them yet, you are lucky. Unfortunately, they are spreading at such an alarming rate that it is really difficult to avoid exposure to molds.

Outdoor, you can still avoid exposure by simply leaving the place where you sense the presence of molds and mildews. When they grow inside your home, you have simply no option but to live with these harmful creatures under the same roof!

This is not at all desired. The mold species Stachybotrys chartarum is extremely dangerous for human health. You may wonder what kind of mold is this! Haven’t you heard of black mold? Stachybotrys chartarum is the scientific name of black mold. It is a greenish black fungal growth generally found outdoors. In can also grow on damp and water damaged walls, floors, furniture and organic products.

They obtain nutrition from dead organic materials by decomposing them into simpler substances. They reproduce through spore formation. Black mold spores are released in air and taken by air current mainly.

Mold spores are everywhere. Airborne mold spores come in with air mainly. They often get stuck on human body, clothes and even on pets in outdoor. And easily find their way into your basement, kitchen, bathroom, garden or crawl places. These mold spores float in the air and enter into your body when you breathe in.

But that happens to all mold species, how black mold is different and why are they called toxic?

Why black molds are toxic?

Toxic black molds, Stachybotrys or black mold, whatever you call them, produce mycotoxins during metabolism. Mycotoxins are found on the substance they grow on, in airborne hyphal parts and in mold spores. Mycotoxins make black molds more dangerous for human beings. When they grow inside homes or business premises, the risk of exposure to black molds increase many times. One needs to use black mold cleaner to kill toxic molds.

Different species of molds produce mycotoxins of varied severity. The amount produced and the level of toxicity also may depend on the present conditions of life. When all the conditions - moisture, food source, air and temperature, are right, higher amount of mycotoxins are produced which make the situation worse.

Different species of fungus produce different types of toxins; needless to mention that not all the toxins affect human system in the same way. Mold sampling is often done to find out the type of mold contamination. Once you know the species of molds, you can figure out what type of health concerns does it associate with.

Mycotoxins - black mold health effects:

* Weaker immune system

* Allergy, irritation of eyes, throat and skin

* Sickness, diarrhea and even death

Some forms of mycotoxins have higher impact on pets than on humans. Indoor toxic black mold growth can be lethal. Black molds should always be removed with black mold killer.

What kills mold?

Though people have been using bleaches to kill mold, bleach has certain limitations. It cannot reach to the toughest corner of your room or some narrow cracks on the wall where molds have started nesting.

Bleach may clean the place temporarily but it fails to prevent future contamination. Moreover, bleach is not good for human health, hence it can add to the problems.

Natural black mold killer are good from all perspectives. Being natural they are free from side effects; hence no health threats are associated with them. Top of all, they prevent future mold growth efficiently.

Hurting asked:

I’ve been telling the owner where I live and work that I have black mold, which, the sheetrock behind all the walls, which black has come through the walls, and everytime it rains, which this has been going on for over 6 months, my house is flooded, and the baseboards have just fallen off, ect..covered in black speckled mold, is this black mold or mildew. He says it’s mildew, but, this has been going on for such a long time, he hasn’t seen it, he’s going by what the contractor who has taken over six months to find the leak, and the owner is siding with what the contractor says, and I’ve gotten repiratory infections twice, stay on antibiotics, and my sinuses/allergies are so bad, which I take meds year round for arn’t helping the pain in my face, thus, my dr. doesn’t know anything else to do but send me to an ear, nose and throat dr. The owner says, that there is pollen in the air, which I know that, but, take meds for that and my meds arn’t working, & can’t keep taking antibiotics.

How can I clean Black Mold from carpet?

Colini asked:

I just moved out of my apartment, and after moving some furniture, discovered some black mold growing on the carpet (and into the wood of my furniture which we had to just toss)…Its not a huge area, how can I clean it? The carpet is mauve, and therefore, I don’t think bleach would be a good idea…
I can’t replace the carpet…Or rather, I am not willing to do that…

Is it still the landlords’s responsibilty if it was possibly caused by a spill that wasn’t properly cleaned? I imagine that is what happened, although I have no way of knowing for sure…But it was in the area around the base of the nightstand in the bedroom…maybe someone dumped a water or something…I imagine that I am responsible for that…?

Smart Home-buying: Independent Home Inspectors Work for you - Not the Realtor

Apr 10

Rick Zwierzynski asked:

Who Needs a Home Inspection Anyway?

Buying a home is one of the most important purchases you will make in your lifetime, so you should be sure that the home (house, condo, townhouse) you want to buy is in good condition. A home inspection is an evaluation of a home’s condition by a trained expert. During an independent home inspection, a qualified inspector takes an in-depth and impartial look at the property you plan to buy.

The home inspector will:

* Evaluate the physical condition: the structure, construction and mechanical systems.

* Identify items that should be repaired or replaced.

* Estimate the remaining useful life of the major systems (such as electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning), equipment, structure and finishes.

After the inspection is complete, you will receive a written report of the findings from the home inspector, usually within 24 hours.

Finding a Qualified Independent Home Inspector

As the homebuyer, it is your responsibility to carefully select a qualified inspector. I stress that it is “your” responsibility, and not your agent’s. After you purchase your new home, your agent will not be responsible for paying the unexpected repair costs that result from non-thorough home inspections. Any unexpected repair costs will be your responsibility.

Understanding the Home Inspector / Realtor Relationship

For your protection, hire an independent home inspector, instead of a home inspector who is recommended by your real estate agent. Here’s why:

Most home inspectors solicit real estate agents for work, hoping that the real estate agent will exclusively recommend his home inspection services to all the real estate agent’s clients. Agents work with many home-buyers throughout the year, and each home-buyer will eventually need a home inspection in order to close the sale. So, it originally made sense for an agent to find one or two home inspectors that he/she could regularly recommend to clients. However, this Agent / Home Inspector relationship carries a conflict of interest.

Here’s why:

(a)Real Estate Agents make commission when their client buys the home.

(b)A client will only buy if s/he finds the home’s condition acceptable (Among other reasons)

(c)So, a negative home inspection can stop a home sale (and the Agent’s commission)

Now, this is not an accusation of any Agents or Home Inspectors. However, in this relationship, the Home Inspector may feel stated or unstated pressure from the Agent. There may be pressure to deliver positive home inspection reports or the agent may pressure the home inspector to produce inspection reports in less time at the expense of performing a more thorough inspection. After all, the Agent could easily replace the Home Inspector with another who may write more lenient reports. To be honest, there are many other Home Inspectors who would line up to get a steady flow of new clients from the Agent.

The Bottom Line: Spending Hundreds May Save Thousands

When you make a written offer on a home, you should insist that the contract state that the offer is contingent on a home inspection conducted by a qualified independent inspector of your choice. Independent home inspectors are hired by you, and they do not have a relationship with the real esate agent. Hiring a qualified independent home inspector could keep you from buying a house that will cost you many thousands of dollars in repairs down the road. Only after the independent home inspection is complete and you are satisfied with the results of the inspection, your real estate purchase offer can proceed.
