How to buy an umbrella liability insurance policy?

Apr 06

John asked:

Homeowners who insure their homes and cars with the same insurance company can often buy an “umbrella” policy that covers everything beyond their homes and vehicles.

Although I don’t own a home, I have substantial financial asset (stocks and bonds) that I want to protect. If possible, I want to avoid renters’ insurance because I don’t have much valuable stored at home. What is the best way for me to protect my financial asset against lawsuits that aren’t from car accidents?

I want the insurance company to provide good lawyers in case I’m hit by a frivolous lawsuit, such as sexual harassment and discrimination although my profession doesn’t expose me to medical malpractice suits.

What are my options and how should I choose?

What does personal liability cover for a homeowners insurance policy?

Happy asked:

I’m self employed (gardening business) and have 4 employees and I have lots of customers. I’m getting a homeowners policy but I’m wondering if I should get 300K or 500K personal liability coverage. Will this coverage also cover me if someone or my customers tries to sue me? For example, I heard if my kid was at the park and if something did happen and he injured someone personal liability should cover it. So would it also cover my business if anyone sues me? Someone recommended a umbrella policy but what is that exactly and what does it cover? How much would it cost?Because I won’t have a lot of income left after my two mortgage payments and miscellaneous expenses (including business expenses). thank you in advance.

If anyone knows a good company for homeowners and auto insurance. It has to be able to accept home daycares in the liability. Everyone I try wont accept you if you have a home daycare. I have farmers and I have been told it is very high. If anyone knows please let me know. Serious answers only please. Thanks in advance! (O:
I have a business policy attached to my farmers but I guess most of the insurance companies that I have talked to wont let me have them both. Either they have it or not.

rbh101 asked:

Location: California

Care provided is non-skilled/ custodial only.

The care receiver is my domestic partner.

Long term care policy says I must have professional liability insurance “to protect the care receiver from any injuries sustained due to care provided”.

Both our names are on our homeowners policy - which has a $2 M personal umbrella policy (apparently not adequate)

Or vice versa. I have a home based business where no business actually takes place in the home but my address for the general liability policy is the home address. Will the general liability need proof of homeowners or will homeowners need info on general liability? If none of the business takes place in the home will the homeowners insurance company have a problem?

I own a vacation home rental property that I rent by week and weekends. If the renter damages my property will I be able to bring suit against them and their homeowners policy pay for the damages?
I had a renter use my property and they or their guest put burn holes in my furniture and carpet. They also broke a bed and put a hole in the wall. They have a NJ HO3 policy, will that pay the damages? Is the damage considered intentional?
I do know HO3 liability policies cover for property damage. If it wasn’t done diliberately. Liability covers the homeowner and their resident relatives wherever they are; not just on the premises. This is what I am wondering, will their homewoners liability property damage coverage provide for the damage they done to my property. I know I would have to bring suit against them but the LIABILITY PD coverage part should cover the damage they done to my property. I think this correct but looking for correct language if anyone knows!
